The Monroe/Easton Veterans' Day Ceremony
November 11, 2010
at the Stepney Green.
It was felt by many that Armistice Day, originally established in 1938
to recognize the sacrifices of World War I Veterans did not sufficiently
honor all those who fought for America afterwards, such as during the
Second World War and the Korean War. Alvin King from Emporia,
Kansas is the person credited with giving us Veterans' Day when he
expanded the celebration of Armistice Day to include the other conflicts
with ceremonies and a parade on November 11, 1953. Kansas Governor
Edward F. Arn attended and suggested that this should be done in every
city in the nation. Next spring U.S. Representative Ed Rees of Emporia
introduced legislation in Congress to change Armistice Day to Veterans'
Day for all Americans. On October 8, 1954 President Eisenhower signed
a proclamation that stated, "On that day, let us solemnly remember the
sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and
on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom."
